Type Locality and Naming

Western Middle Tianshan. The Machanggou Fm was named by Gao Zhenjia et al. in 1977. The type section is at Machanggou Village on east bank of Koksu River Valley, southeast of Tekes County, Xinjiang Weiwuerzhu Zizhiqu (Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region). Uppermost formation in Tekes Gr.

Synonym: (马厂沟组)


Lithology and Thickness

In the type section, the Machanggou Fm is dominated by a carbonate rock association of grey thick-bedded and thin-bedded dolomitic and siliceous crystalline limestone, medium- to thick-bedded dolomitic marble and minor quartzite. The formation is 290 m thick in the type section, but it is greatly variable both in lithological character and thickness.

Relationships and Distribution

Lower contact

It is in conformable contact with underlying Toudaoqiao Fm.

Upper contact

It is in conformable contact with Kekesu Gr.

Regional extent

Western Middle Tianshan. The formation is distributed at Halajun Mountain, Borohoro Mt. and Jianshanzi- Xingxingxia in east sector of Tianshan Mountains.

The lower part bears stromatolites, such as Kussiella f., Gruneria f., Stratifera f., Conophyton f., Colonnella f.
